The Japan Fluid Power System Society

Message from the president of JFPS

My name is Yutaka Tanaka, appointed as the president for the 2024 and 2025 terms at the recent general assembly of the Japan Fluid Power System Society. Over the next two years, I will work together with the vice presidents, directors, and auditors to manage the operations of the society. I sincerely appreciate your support and cooperation.

From 2020 to 2023, during the four years of the COVID-19 pandemic, under the strong leadership of former presidents Kazushi Sanada and Yasuhiro Hayakawa, the 50th anniversary commemorative ceremony, events, and party of our society were successfully held. We were able to smoothly conduct all the activities marking the 50th anniversary of our society. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the society members and supporting member companies for their cooperation, and we ask for your continued support in the future.

Looking at the current situation of our society, we continue to see a decrease in senior members due to retirements and other factors, as well as stagnation in the growth of younger members. Increasing the number of young members is one of the major challenges for the sustainable development of our society over the next 30 years. As a new initiative, our society has been hosting career support seminars remotely for students of universities, graduate schools, and technical colleges since the year before last, facilitating exchanges between engineers from various fluid power companies and students. We hope that student members from fluid power research labs at educational institutions will continue to be members as young corporate members after graduation.

Additionally, for the stable operation of our society, industry-academia collaboration between educational and research institutions and companies is essential. Through the regular spring and autumn conferences, various seminars, and cooperation with organizations such as the Japan Fluid Power Association, we will further strengthen the system for technical consultations from the corporate side on fluid power. We also plan to collaborate with the industry association to offer basic pneumatics courses with hands-on training as on-site classes for university students, aiming to increase the number of young fans of fluid power. We hope that all members will actively make use of these initiatives.

This year, the International Fluid Power Exhibition (IFPEX 2024) will be held from September 18 to 20 in Odaiba, Tokyo, and the International Symposium on Fluid Power will be held from October 22 to 25 in Hiroshima. Additionally, at the spring conference on June 21, a special lecture was held by Professor Ai Chao of Yanshan University, China. Next year, the International Exchange Committee is also preparing for the Japan-China-Korea Fluid Power Workshop. Furthermore, exchanges with the Fluid Power Society of India, where significant future development is expected, have begun. After a hiatus of about four years due to COVID-19, international exchanges are resuming through these international exchange programs. We hope that our members will take this opportunity to deepen their international exchanges.

In the inaugural issue of our society’s journal (October 1970), the first president, Chairman Niwa, stated, “The foundation of sound technological development is theory, the function of the society is to provide answers and mutual assistance to engineers. The essence of the society is an open forum for common knowledge of technology and theory.” The mission of our society is to provide a forum for fluid power technology research where technology and theory can be openly discussed between industry and academia. From this perspective, we will strive to manage our society with the support of all members and the secretariat. We humbly ask for your continued understanding and further support and cooperation.

July 1st, 2024.

Yutaka TANAKA
