Saving the World's Energy with Fluid Power |

BIOGRAPHIES
Kim A. Stelson is Director of the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. The center includes seven universities, three non-profit organizations and more than fifty member companies. He is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota where he has been since 1981. Stelson is Associate Technical Editor of the Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control, a journal that has twice awarded him the best paper award. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Stelson’s research in fluid power emphasizes the potential for new technology to greatly improve energy efficiency in new and existing applications such as the control of vehicle power trains and hydrostatic transmissions for wind turbines. Before becoming involved in fluid power research, Stelson was active in research in the modeling and control of manufacturing processes, especially metal forming, polymer processing and composite materials manufacturing. He has been a visiting faculty member at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Auckland and the University of Bath. He has previously been Director of the Design and Manufacturing Division and Director of Graduate Studies for the M.S. in Manufacturing Systems Program at the University of Minnesota. He received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 1974 and his S.M. and Sc.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1977 and 1982. |

BIOGRAPHIES
FU Xin received his Ph.D degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Leoben, Austria, in 1998, He joined the faculty of mechanical engineering in Zhejiang University, China. He was appointed the director of the State Key Laboratory of Fluid Power Transmission and Control from 2005 to 2009 and vice dean of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2009. He is involved in research pertaining to the vibration and noise control in fluid power system, micro-fluidic system and flow measurement. He is the author or co-author of over 200 technical papers. He holds 50 patents and is a warded 5 national and provincial prizes of science and technology progress. |

From 1997-2000 he worked as a research associate in Tokyo Metropolitan College of Technology. He has been Associate Professor in Tokyo Institute of Technology since Nov. 2000. He was also a Deputy Director, Council for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, Cabinet Office, Government of Japan from 2009 to 2011. His research interests are Robotics, Fluid Measurement and Control. His recent works are surgical robot with force display, power assist robot, tele-operation of robotics and haptic devices. |

BIOGRAPHIES
Professor Masami Nakano from Institute of Fluid Science, Tohoku University in Japan, has the last 17 year’s experiences of researching and developing ER and MR fluids and the associated technologies. He graduated from Waseda University in 1976, and received his Master’s degree in 1978 and his Doctoral degree in 1982 in the field of Mechanical Engineering from Waseda University. After getting the Doctoral degree, he had been working at Yamagata University as an assistant professor, an associate professor, and a professor until 2008. Since 2008, he has been working at Institute of Fluid Science, Tohoku University.
His current research interests are the active control of flow-induced vibration and noise, the controls of vehicle and structural vibrations and actuators utilizing controllable fluids such as ER and MR fluids.
He is a chairperson of the research committee on “the fusion of fluid power systems utilizing functional fluids as the core” and a director in Japan Fluid Power Society(JFPS), and a Fellow of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers(JSME). And he has received the Best Paper Award, the Frontier Certificate of Merit, the Fluid Engineering Division Award, and the Technology and Research Award from the JSME |
